Originally formulated as "Alloy 61S", it is one of the most versatile heat-treatable structural alloys available. The T6 temper represents solution heat treatment followed by artificial aging. This process maximizes the precipitation of Mg₂Si phases within the aluminum matrix, substantially raising yield strength from ~55 MPa in the annealed (O) state to over 276 MPa.
6061-T6 profiles demonstrate excellent chip formation, making them perfect for precise post-extrusion CNC milling, boring, and tapping. When welded (via TIG or MIG), joint yield values can drop; however, localized post-weld aging can restore significant structural performance.
The addition of chromium provides high resistance to atmospheric and marine corrosion. 6061 offers excellent response to anodizing (protective or hard-coat), powder coating, and PVDF liquid coatings, ensuring long-term structural integrity.
